sitting, lights totally out,
in a supermarket,
the three of us,
on a vigil never forgotton.

was it another missle crisis?
would it finally happen?
every flash from the street …
we jumped.

someone brought some hot coffee,
the policeman stopped by and chatted,
the sun rose after all.

my parents were angry,
I should have been home,
that is what they said,
especially my dad.

but I forgot I was a son,
for that night, I was a soldier,
at the edges of time,
alone, with my companions,
holding up the world,
in the dark, with candles,
and soft, determined voices.
