Kelley O’Hara, USA Women’s Soccer, after scoring goal

What a victory! Especially for those of us who remember the magic of 1999!

Kelly O’Hara, who had just checked into play moments before, could not contain her joy, at scoring the only non penalty goal of the game, to put the USA up, 2-0, and pretty much seal the victory.

Of course the game was not without controversy. Earlier, Julie Johnson had committed a foul in the penalty box, which drew a penalty kick from Germany. She also drew a yellow card; some say she should have drawn a red card. Then Hope Solo did her little three minute voodoo walk and put the ice on the star German penalty kicker, Celia Sasic. Sasic blew the shot, veering to the left, the first penalty shot ever missed by a German team in World Cup play, male or female!

Moments later, Alex Morgan drew a foul that started just outside the German penalty box (it did finish within the penalty box), but the German defender drew a yellow card and the US was awarded a penalty kick. Carli Lloyd scored the penalty shot, and the US went up 1-0.

If the action stopped there, the US would get the victory, but it would not have been the same. Both penalty shots are surrounded by some controversy. However, moments after Carli Lloyd kicked the penalty shot into the net, she executed a perfect pass to Kelley O’Hara, the beaming face you see above, who kicked it into the goal. Now there could be no doubt about the victory, from any angle!

Nice job team USA! Good Luck on Sunday!
