O lone streetlight,
Trying to shed
What light you can
On a spider repairing his web
This autumn night,
Stay with me,
As I push further and further
Into the dark.

“At Tender Mercy” is the last poem in Charles Simic’s newest book of poetry, “Scribbled In The Dark”, published in June, 2017. The poems are divided into four sections of 15 poems, and all but one are on one page. It is the kind of book you will read quickly, in one night, and then return to, over and over, carefully savoring each page. Charles Simic turned 80 in May, 2017.
