inPainting by Florentine Cosimo Rosselli
This is a painting usually titled Madonna and Child from the late 1400’s, generally ascribed to Florentine Cosimo Roselli. It is 28×18 on wood. The original is an enamel paint on wood, 28 x 18; this is a fine print reproduction.
Though the theme is purportedly a religious one, clearly the artist is either painting his wife or a friend’s wife and their child. The baby Jesus, and Mary did not dress this way. They were poor folks in Galilee. This young woman and her child are from the well off in Renaissance Italy. Her style is elegant without being opulent. She is young and beautiful as is the beautiful child she is holding. The love of the artist for this couple, and the love of the young woman for her child is evident.
Life may have been short in the 15th century; disease was devastating, there was little medicine, there were constant wars. But it also could be sweet, beautiful, modest and elegant, all at the same time, as this fine art print based on the original painting demonstrates.
