Bannerman Island
home of castles and legends
a floating treasure
in the midst of the Hudson
**********************************
Bannerman Island is a legendary island that sits in the middle of the Hudson River up around West Point and Cornwall On The Hudson. It has a castle and a very interesting history! I hope to write more about it in the days to come.
Last week in New York, on Feb 4, we had the most severe freezing rain storm I have ever seen in New York. It was both dangerous and beautiful at the same time.
Equally relevant, in the coming week, on Feb 14th, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day!
I created this post as a coming together of these two themes.
The love story from Greek Mythology of Orpheus and Eurydice is well known. Orpheus, the patron of music, lost his beautiful Eurydice twice: once through a cruel twist of fate and once through an understandable, though tragic, lack of faith.
I cannot think of words for this portrait, your sadness is too poignant, your eyes are too melancholy, your spirit is too fragile;
Many centuries have passed since your reign, your beauty has not faded, it is more resilient than ever, but history has been too overwhelming, too brutal, too crude, too cruel, for your delicate tasks;
The onrush of injustice has been way too much for you and your progeny, time has slipped by so fast, stolen your powers, and left you confused and alone;
Like humanity itself you have become lost and forgotten, waiting on each day with joy, basking in the sun when it is there, forgetting tomorrow and yesterday, as if they never existed or could exist;
In the darkness of these times, in the uncertainty of our dreams,
what is to become of you and yours sweet princess of time and history?
My special thanks to Lucy from Lucy’s Works who introduced me to the Greek goddess Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory and mother of the Muses, among other things. You can find more about this fascinating figure here: https://greekmythology.wikia.org/wiki/Mnemosyne.
A mural on an abandoned street in Cairo. A beautiful drawing that folks say is called Tiye, The Birth Of An Egyptian Princess. Abayomi walks by every day and leaves flowers underneath this imaginary art and whispers brief prayers of solitude. Folks say be careful, you might get arrested in these dangerous times. Abayomi says if getting arrested for paying homage to an ancient princess is a crime, let me get arrested. Eventually he does get arrested and no one ever hears from him again. Folks swear if you look long enough you can begin to see a teardrop emerge beneath the princess’s eye.
