Carnival week
in our small town,
Open tents, sermons, and gambling,
Ferris wheels to touch the sky,
Clowns, girlfriends, fooling around,
Sweet Buttery popcorn,
Hot dogs on Merry-Go-Rounds,
Candied apples and Cotton candy
on a stick.

A burst of energy, a display of power, a sense of mayhem, a feeling of movement.
Welcome to New York City, The Underground.
Where it all comes together, or it all falls apart.
Trains come from every which way, and they come
and go all day long. Newcomers always get lost,
then get found again.
No matter what you might think, the city
could never function as it expects, without this hotspot of
craziness.
I know right now, New York City, is having many problems. Crime, housing, unemployment, a post-covid sense of depression. Things don’t look very good. But the City has been in dire striaghts before. A number of times. And it always has come back. And it will come back again.
It may take time, but it will happen.

Today on Labor Day, we celebrate the hard work of all the folks both here in the United States, and abroad, who keep the world moving. We treasure their efforts, we appreciate their courage and steadfastness.
The last few years have been particularly difficult. It is one thing to have to get up every morning and go to your job; it is quite another when for many jobs, the risk of catching a dangerous virus is also part of the day’s work.
Let us not forget that in the days ahead.
