This is another restored poster from the iconic WPA era. The original was completed sometime in the 1930s under the New Deal WPA program which was an attempt to put Americans back to work, including artists, and artisans.

The poster features a Cardinal on a branch, with the saying “Protect Our Birds”. The sponsor was the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

It is a simple, yet powerful, conservation poster, that is still relevant today. Birds are very special to me since I see them almost every day, when I take my daily walks. They are my trusted companions.

Goergia O’Keeffe

Celebrating women this week in honor of Internatinal Women’s Day, March 8, 2020!

Iconic American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe! It is hard to imagine that at one time she was not considered a major artist of the early and mid twentieth century.

Her style often blends Modernist techniques with her own life, and her love of natural landscapes. Flowers are certainly one of her favorite subjects. This work, Petunias #2, blends coloration, geometric design, and perspective, all in a fanciful way to capture the simple beauty of petunias, flowers which we see and experience very year. It is decorative, yes, almost in an Arts & Crafts kind of way, but it also scintillates with that special magic Georgia O’Keeffe often imparts with her unique styling.

For those who might be interested, I created a letter size print based on this painting, that came out well. You can check it out here:

Celebrating women this week in honor of Internatinal Women’s Day, March 8, 2020!

Artist, socialite, fashion icon, Tamara de Lempicka, lit up the art world in the 1920s with her unique brand of Art Deco styling. Many critics dismissed her, some even to this day, but her works continue to shine and inspire.

This particular work, “Green Veil”, painted somewhere in the early 1920s (probably 1924), shows some of her techniques. The influences of Cezanne, and Cubism, the bold brush strokes, the almost sculpture like design of the face, all exhibit the type of styling Lempicka used at this point in her career.

For those who might be interested, I created a letter size print based on this painting, that quite frankly, came out better than I anticipated. You can check it out here:
