did you hear the drumbeats,
distant and foreboding?

1976,
anarchy in the uk,
dissolution, inflation, chaos,
in every land,

cocaine runnin round my brain,
girls in the back,
the front, underneath, above,
everywhere,
boys too,

street gangs in washington square park,
whips in the night,
fires in pails, laughing, drugs, fear,
where flowers and guitars
once reigned,

subways with police, shots heard,
garbage piling up,
vietnam still, recent memories,

heroin downtown, late night cars,
snorting (no shooting),
depression, no jobs, pocket change,

silly faces on tv,
spinning disco balls,
some people still have it good,

and everyone else wondering
are we the next
weimer republic

(so, someone said
if sex is a pistol,
shoot me dead)

and,
thatcher and reagan,
doing the fandango,
down at the waldorf
.
